One of London’s most iconic event venues; The End night club / AKA, the home to so much wonderful music over the years, has re opened as ‘The Den and Centro’ with our first launch party on the 18th July 2009. Your time, the newest dubstep festival to hit London, will be taking over all three rooms launching a new residency and Truth’s EP release party on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz record label. With over 30 artists, across three levels including DJ sets, live bands, live MC battles & live production performances primarily featuring Dubstep as well as selected sets of Hip Hop, Old Skool Jungle, House & Electronic rock, giving each room something exciting and different from the other while keeping the foundation of Dubstep.

Dustin Humphrey for Insight

While I was looking at photography award winners, I came across Dustin Humphrey’s collection for surf brand Insight which took First Place for the Commercial/Advertising category at the Sony World Photography Awards. Thinking about what what my friend Tom said the other day about how he sometimes felt bored by a lot of contemporary photography, I felt this was delightfully unordinary.

Leica Oskar Barnack Award

Mikhail Subotzky was recently announced as the winner of Leica’s prestigious 30th annual Oskar Barnack Award. The winning portfolio was entitled ‘Beaufort West’ and the photographs were taken in the South African town of the same name. Subotzky started out with the intention of lifting the skirt of crime and punishment and the secrets that lie behind the bars of South Africa’s prison cells. However, upon meeting the inmates, the work took on a much more personal exploratory tone, and the photographs begin to highlight the importance of self-awareness and compassion. The award was given by an international jury and the criteria to be filled were that submissions must “capture and express the relationship between man and the environment in the most graphic form in a sequence of up to 12 images. Entry submissions must be a self-contained series of images in which the photographer perceives and documents the interaction between man and the environment with acute vision and contemporary visual style – creative, groundbreaking and unintrusive.”

Brand New: Daisy

The release of Brand New’s fourth studio album has been slated for the 22nd September 2009. The album, entitled Daisy will be released through Interscope records.

In an interview earlier this month, frontman Jesse Lacey commented on the upcoming album’s content, “It’s a pretty exhausting record. It’s quite dense and I think some of the decisions we made don’t always go in the most obvious direction. We were thinking a lot more about what we’d want to play when we were up onstage rather than actually what you’d want to hear on a record.”

“A couple weekends ago some of the crew went out for an all day skate mission. It was for a contest put on by FTC and Slap Magazine. A video is in the works from that day and there is much more to come in regards to the contest.” -HUF

I really liked the styling of the photographs taken by Hanni El Khatib. It really brings out what I love about San Francisco. Fingers crossed, it won’t be too long before I’m back.

Picasso: Drawing With Light

LIFE photographer Gjon Mili visited Picasso in 1949. Mili showed the artist some of his photographs of ice skaters with tiny lights affixed to their skates jumping in the dark—and Picasso’s mind began to race. The series of photographs that follows—Picasso’s light drawings—were made with a small flashlight in a dark room; the images vanished almost as soon as they were created.

Really clean, high quality shots, staged violent debauchery and hella tight skills make for an extremely entertaining twenty three minutes. Daryl Angel and Grant Taylor have standout parts. Since the mid 90’s, Maurice has produced paintings, prints, collages, sculptures and installations that reflect the spontaneous and informal nature of graffiti writing and have explored the recurring themes of energy, growth patterns and cycles in nature.

This collection of new paintings, small-scale sculptures and installations, take these themes forward into new realms – to consider theories regarding the spirit world, the physical and metaphysical, consciousness and death.

Using a mix of abstraction and cartoon elements, many of Maurice’s paintings appear on old silkscreens and transparent silkscreen mesh, echoing their transient, ethereal subject matter. His works collectively attempt to create a layered narrative, each is a fragment that forms building blocks for a larger universe, holding theoretical ‘spirits’ that inhabit each work.

Influenced by wide ranging sources, from Blake and Alchemic theory, to the nostalgia of 1930’s cartoons, Maurice’s works are unsettling and humorous depictions of a world inhabited by roaming spirits.

The exhibition runs until the 28th of June

“Does letting go of your darkest thoughts through writing and singing give you any sort of outlet or comfort from those very thoughts themselves?

The new Blacklisted album has a line that says “No one will ever come for me, No one will ever comfort me”, I feel as though I am included in that “No one”. I see myself as just a man behind a curtain. I may be on stage, being loud and really upfront and emotional, but the reality of it is, that is the only time I am like that. Blacklisted is my machine and it always has been, when I am playing I am controlling it, but if you get to know me, or know anything about me, I am just a small scared man behind it. So I never feel comforted by it, if anything it just hinders me emotionally because at one point everyday there was this 20 minute window where I was a machine and then the other 23 hours and 40 minutes of the day I am someone who swims around in their head all day feeling like everyone hates me and I am the most disgusting person on the planet…”
